Four earthquakes have occurred in the last few days in the northern and western areas of Pakistan. There was a stir in Pakistan’s land due to the earthquake, along with this, there was a lot of discussion on social media of these earthquakes. Some people on social media are linking these earthquakes with Pakistan’s possible nuclear test, although no such activity has been confirmed by India. These earthquakes have occurred at a time when tension between India and Pakistan has increased due to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and then India’s military action.
Pakistan’s fresh earthquake occurred on Monday, the intensity of 4.6. Earlier on May 10, the ground was shaken twice a day – the first earthquake was 4.7 in the morning and the second 4.0 magnitude. These earthquakes have created fear in the minds of the people, as well as questions whether these natural phenomena have any connection with the current political situation, or it is just a coincidence.
The cause of earthquake is natural or anything else?
Geologists and meteorologists say that recent earthquakes have come due to stir in tectonic plates of the Himalayan region. This area is considered to be earthquake anyway, so earthquake here is not new. But the way earthquakes have been repeatedly coming in recent times as well as military tension between India and Pakistan have increased, it has given rise to many speculation on social media.
Many claims on social media
On May 12, a social media user claimed, “Depending on geolocation, there is Pakistan’s nuclear weapons storage site in the Grocery Hills. A 4.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded from the Er explosion.” Although such claims have not been officially confirmed, such theorys are very much discussed on social media.
Four earthquakes have occurred in Pakistan within the last 13 days – 30 April, May 5, May 10 and May 12 Many people are raising questions on social media on this connection whether these shocks are only natural or there is any other reason behind it, such as underground nuclear test or any military activity? One user wrote, “4 earthquakes in 13 days. All shocks have come in almost the same place. Are these just natural shocks or a sign of a big military operation or testing? Just the land is not moving, something else is going on.” Another user wrote on X, “These natural earthquakes do not occur. It seems as if there was a major incident at the nuclear bases of Pakistan.”
Can there be reasons behind the earthquake
Some experts have expressed apprehension that recent earthquakes may be the result of secret nuclear tests. He says that this doubt is not completely baseless. Pakistan has already conducted an underground nuclear test – the most famous test took place in Chagai Hills in 1998. Such tests stir in the ground, which can catch earthquake measuring devices (sensors). Therefore, some people believe that the reason for recent shocks can be not only natural, but some hidden activity.
Expert said this
Director of National Center for Sisamology O. P. Mishra has rejected the claims being made in Pakistan regarding possible nuclear tests. He said, “Atomic explosions and natural earthquake signs are completely different from each other. While there are two stages of natural earthquakes, there is a special third stage in the atomic explosion, which is caused by the waves that collide with the surface.” He said that sesismographs (earthquake measuring devices) can clearly identify these two.
