The Ministry of External Affairs said on Monday that India would postpone the Indus Water Treaty until Pakistan stops supporting terrorism across the border. New Delhi took a decisive step to suspend the Indus Water Treaty during the Cabinet Committee meeting on security issues exactly a day after the Pahalgam terror attack. 26 people lost their lives in this attack.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said, “Now according to the decision of the Cabinet Committee of Security Affairs (CCS) on 23 April, India will postpone the treaty as long as Pakistan does not relinquish its support for terrorism across the border.
He said that the Indus Water Treaty was signed in 1960 with a sense of goodwill and friendship, as written in its preamble. However, Pakistan has weakened these principles by promoting cross -border terrorism for decades.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman also confirmed India’s long-standing position that any issue related to Jammu and Kashmir should be resolved bilaterally between India and Pakistan, and there has been no change in this policy.
Jaiswal said, “We have been a national attitude for a long time that any issue related to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will have to resolve India and Pakistan bilaterally. There has been no change in this policy. The pending case is to vacate the Indian territory illegally occupied by Pakistan.”
Water and blood cannot flow together: PM Modi
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while speaking about the Indus Water Treaty, said that “water and blood cannot flow together”. India suspended the treaty under its diplomatic action on Pakistan.
Prime Minister Modi said in the name of the nation a day earlier, “Terrorism and business cannot run together, water and blood cannot flow together.”
India suspended the Indus Water Treaty, which was a historic water-distribution agreement with Pakistan in 1960 under the World Bank’s mediation.
This is the first time after the formation of the treaty that India has formally prohibit its implementation, which shows a major change in its diplomatic attitude.
